Shadow Warrior 2 is a first-person shooter centered around an all-out hunt for demons. Set five years after the events of the first game, it follows the story of anti-hero Lo Wang, now a mercenary taking on monsters, yakuza and other enemies for hire. During a routine job, he stumbles into a conspiracy involving a corrupt corporation and an ancient demonic force. With the help of spirits and familiar allies, Lo Wang battles his way through a series of chaotic missions, always armed with his sharp tongue and a taste for over-the-top violence.
Alongside its fast-paced shooting action, Shadow Warrior 2 offers a deep melee combat system. Players can seamlessly switch between a wide range of firearms and traditional bladed weapons, from pistols and shotguns to katanas, chainsaws and magical swords. Combat feels highly dynamic, with agility playing a key role – double jumps, side rolls and dash attacks let players dodge incoming strikes and quickly shift the distance between them and their enemies.
One of the major improvements over its predecessor is the introduction of procedurally generated levels, with semi-open mission areas that feature changing layouts and varying loot. Shadow Warrior 2 also includes a deep weapon customization system, offering more than 70 different weapons to collect and modify. RPG elements like experience points, skill upgrades and weapon bonuses add long-term appeal. Players can dive into an expansive single-player campaign or team up with up to three others in cooperative multiplayer.
Reviews: Action spectacle with minor weaknesses
In its review, the German gaming magazin GameStar gave Shadow Warrior 2 high marks, calling it "the evil bastard of Doom and Borderlands." The team praised the game's fast-paced combat, the satisfying melee system and the strong weapon feedback. Varied level designs, the witty anti-hero Lo Wang and a fitting soundtrack help create hours of entertaining gameplay. Thanks to a rewarding loot system, a wide range of enemies and procedurally generated levels, the game offers strong replay value. According to GameStar, it also runs smoothly even on older hardware.
Despite the many positives, Shadow Warrior 2 isn't without its flaws. The story ends on a confusing note, hit feedback can feel imprecise at times and some menus are cluttered and difficult to navigate. In co-op mode, gameplay remains somewhat unbalanced, as only the host can perform quest-related actions. There are also occasional technical bugs and the human character models, in particular, left a poor impression on testers. Nevertheless, the game scored an impressive 90 out of 100 points in the GameStar review. It also enjoys a strong reputation on Steam, with 87% positive feedback from around 23,000 reviews. On Metacritic, critics awarded it a Metascore of 78, while players gave it a User Score of 7.8.

As a child in the 90s, my Gameboy was my steady companion. After school, the PlayStation was fired up. When I finally got my first PC, I was completely hooked. My passion for gaming has never waned since. For me, writing for Notebookcheck means reporting on topics that are really close to my heart - in addition to gaming, I also like to write about e-mobility, photovoltaics and innovative gadgets. When I'm not sitting at my computer, I'm probably on water rescue duty on the Baltic coast or trying to counteract the downsides of my geek life - namely sitting for long periods - at the local swimming pool.
