Elle se fait par toute une série d’expérimentations décisives. Notamment autour du corps, des sciences, des rapports entre individu et de société dans l’art.
Au milieu des années 1990, Qiu a rédigé d’importants travaux critiques sur la conception de l’art chinois et de la performance artistique. Elles ont conduit à la plus importante controverse dans la théorie de l’art et le monde de l’art chinois. Considéré comme un des leaders les plus éminents des artistes de la jeune génération, Qiu demeure très sollicité par le monde culturel pour ses importantes contributions esthétiques et intellectuelles.
EXPOSITION
En 1996, Qiu Zhijie a coorganisé la première exposition d’art vidéo Phenomena & Image à l’Académie des Beaux-Arts de Hangzhou. Il a également édité deux livres présentant la quasi-totalité des documents de l’histoire de l’art vidéo à travers le monde. Il a joué un rôle artistique important en Chine grâce aux technologies offertes par les nouveaux médias. Puis en 1999, Qiu organise une exposition Post-sens Sensibility – Alien Bodies & Delusion dans un immeuble de Pékin. Cette exposition, montrant les travaux expérimentaux des artistes de la jeune génération utilisant la chair humaine comme matériel artistique. Cela a suscité d’importants débats sur le renouvellement du champ de la recherche artistique. En 2001, Qiu codirige une importante revue artistique, Nextwave, et devient cocommissaire du projet l’année suivante. Plus récemment, il a repris et développé le concept d’art total.
